The introduction of a dissertation should introduce the subject in a clear and comprehensible manner. You should also be able to understand the problems, their relevance, and the solutions you have suggested, as well as specialists from other disciplines that do not deal with your subject at all or not very intensively. For this purpose, a description of the current state of the field is essential. You can refer to differences or similarities between different theories or studies, but be careful not to mention their own results and to discuss them comparably with published data. This is reserved for discussion! Do not lose yourself in elusive definitions and explanations, but rather lead the reader consistently from the known facts to the question of your work, in which you have handled an unsolved problem. The introduction should end with the formulation of the objective and the question.
The discussion is the most demanding and, for many, the most difficult part of the thesis. This chapter deals with the evaluation of the work done. The results are classified into the context of the current state of knowledge and their contribution to the expansion of scientific knowledge, which is explained by a comparative description and interpretation of data from other scientists. You can only write a sound discussion if you have read the literature cited by you carefully! It makes sense to adopt the structure of the discussion as a part of the result. This means that the individual results are dealt with one after the other taking into account the following aspects:
For the result of a dissertation, the same applies to all other scientific examinations: All results must be described clearly and concisely. Whether or not text passages or graphics, photos and tables predominate, it depends largely on your topic. In the case of experimental work with large amounts of data or statistical evaluations, graphics, photos and tables, you have to order it to achieve a clear overview. The objective of each individual experiment / investigation must be explained. The most important statements of the facts reproduced in the illustrations or tables are briefly described in the text and explained with regard to your initial question and the hypothesis. They are not compared and discussed with the results of other authors!
This part of each dissertation is, according to experience, the easiest to write because it is "only" a description of what you have done. Start your writing with this chapter! From the point of view of science, it is an extremely important part: it must contain ALL the information that enables other scientists to repeat the experiments precisely to check their reproducibility, based on the materials and methods used. It depends on the respective topic, which data must be provided. For non-experimental work such as statistical evaluations of already existing data, investigations by questionnaires, interviews and the like, the specification of the statistical procedures used and the exact description of the examined sample, its parameters and interference are necessary. Longer questionnaires are usually included in the appendix.
